How to Choose a General Contractor for Your Home Project

October 13, 2026 Garcia's Construction and Remodeling Inc.

The contractor you choose matters as much as the design. A good one keeps the project on schedule, communicates clearly and stands behind the work. A poor one can turn a remodel into a headache.

Start with the basics: ask for the contractor's license number and proof of insurance, and check the license with the state licensing board. Ask how long they have been in business and for photos or references from similar projects.

Get a written estimate that spells out the scope, materials, timeline and payment schedule. Be wary of a price that is far below everyone else's, a request for a large payment up front, or pressure to sign right now.

Ask who will actually be on site, how often you will get updates and how changes to the plan are handled and priced. Clear answers up front prevent most disputes later.

Finally, trust how they communicate. A contractor who returns calls, explains things plainly and is happy to walk the job with you is usually the one who delivers.
