ADU Guide for High Desert Homeowners

September 29, 2026 Garcia's Construction and Remodeling Inc.

An accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, is a small, self-contained home on the same lot as your main house. It has its own entrance, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area. Many High Desert properties have the space for one.

Homeowners build ADUs for aging parents, adult children, guests or rental income. Because the unit is on your own property, you keep the family close without sharing walls — or earn income from an otherwise unused corner of the yard.

ADUs come in a few forms: a detached backyard unit, a garage conversion, or an addition attached to the house. The best choice depends on your lot size, your existing structures and your budget.

California has made ADUs easier to permit in recent years, but each city still has its own setbacks, size limits and utility requirements. Checking with your city's planning department early saves redesigns later.

A well-built ADU needs a proper slab, framing, roof, electrical service, plumbing and finishes — just like any new home. That is why working with a general contractor who handles all of it matters.
